1857 First investiture of the Victoria Cross.  The first awarding of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award of the British honours system, was held in a ceremony in Hyde Park on Friday, 26 June 1857. Most of the Royal family attended the event, in which Queen Victoria personally handed out the medals. Galleries were constructed on the Park Lane side of Hyde Park so people could watch a display of eight thousand troops that were also present and a twenty-one gun salute. Awards were made to 14 members of the Navy and 48 from the Army, some posthumously.
